What is massage therapy? The practice of massage therapy is the assessment of the soft tissue and joints of the body and the treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain of the soft tissue and joints by manipulation to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function or relieve pain (Massage Therapy Act 1991).
Along with the physical effects of massage therapy comes the reflex effects. A reflex effect is caused by the body's nervous system sending the message of touch along a nerve and producing various effects in any zones supplied by the same spinal cord segment. The effect of a soft soothing touch is a calming and relaxing one. MY approachI believe that in order to rehabilitate or maximize a persons wellness through massage, relaxation must be incorporated. Stress is a main cause of much of the tension, pain, and ailments in the body, so why not rid the cause before treating the issue?
